Future gas costs

The 2022 gas crisis raised urgent questions about the future cost of heating. For the Berlin-based think tank E3G, we assessed the likely development of gas supply costs, supporting the study’s estimates of gas and electricity costs. The study projects additional gas import costs for Germany of €120–200 billion by 2030 compared to historical levels, with gas prices for households nearly doubling. It shows how a heat policy program that exploits the full savings potential in buildings — around 40% more savings by 2030 than planned by the government — can avoid much of these costs, and questions the need for new gas import infrastructure.
