Smart charging

Electric vehicles need only about half an hour of charging per day — if that time is chosen intelligently, drivers can profit from cheap electricity. For Rabot Energy, a smart charging pioneer, we quantified the savings for typical German drivers based on a quarter-hourly optimization of charging behavior. Smart charging on a dynamic tariff alone cuts the charging bill by about half; adding time-of-use grid fees and other price components raises savings above 80%, and with bidirectional charging the bill can even turn negative. Realizing this potential requires a broad rollout of affordable smart meters. This report was originally published in German.
